TiresWhy We Choose BFGOODRICH®

Passion, pride, and performance are BFGOODRICH® values that have stood the test of time. As a maker of superior performance tires, they have been passionately performance-driven since the beginning.

Since the first BFGOODRICH® tire installed on a car in 1896, BFGOODRICH® has been a company of technological advancements and firsts. Henry Ford chose BFGOODRICH® tires for his first Model-Ts in 1903, and in that same year, a Model-T fitted with the same tires completed the first-ever coast-to-coast trip by automobile in the United States.

It’s what led them in the pursuit of creating truck tires tough enough to tackle some of the roughest terrains on the planet, yet still, maintain excellent road manners. That’s why more champions of the grueling SCORE Baja races have won with BFGOODRICH® tires and why the tire with more rock crawling victories bears the BFGOODRICH® name.

BFGOODRICH® 's performance prowess doesn't stop where the pavement starts. BFGOODRICH® street tires have racked up impressive accomplishments over the years — from creating the first street tire to capturing the pole position at the 24 Hours of Le Mans to creating an entirely new level of street tires, the extreme performance category. So, it’s no wonder why top driving schools like Ford Mustang Racing School and Skip Barber High-Performance Driving School, use BFGOODRICH® tires exclusively and why we choose BBFGOODRICH® here at The Wrench Automotive for our drivers.

Early Commitment to Research and Development

From very early in its history Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goodrich committed itself to research and development in rubber technology. Under the aegis of Benjamin Franklin Goodrich's son, Charles Cross Goodrich, the company opened the rubber industry's first experimental research laboratory in 1895. Arthur H. Marks, one of Charles Cross Goodrich's engineers were responsible for several breakthroughs in the processing of crude rubber. In its natural form, crude rubber is very sensitive to changes in temperature, becoming hard and brittle when cooled, and soft and tacky when heated. Vulcanization, a process first discovered by Charles Goodyear in 1839, mixes crude rubber with sulfur and heat to convert it to a durable material unaffected by changes in climate. At the turn of the century, Arthur Marks pioneered a procedure for devulcanizing vulcanized rubber, thus enabling producers to reclaim crude rubber from manufactured goods for re-use. Marks also developed methods for speeding vulcanization by adding certain organic chemical accelerators to the process. The use of such compounds reduced the time necessary for vulcanization by as much as 75 percent.

Charles Cross Goodrich continued to apply the latest technology to its tire production. In 1910 it introduced the first cord tire for use in U.S. automobiles. This tire, which reduced fuel consumption and increased the comfort of the ride, was developed in Silver-town, England, and marketed there as the Palmer Cord. Charles Cross Goodrich purchased the patent rights for it in the United States and sold it to U.S. consumers as the Silvertown Cord. Other innovations in BFGOODRICH®'s tire manufacturing included the use of other organic compounds to resist deterioration by heat, oxidation, and flexing; and carbon black, a coloring pigment that improved the tires' resistance to abrasion.

Postwar Return to the Consumer Market

BFGOODRICH® avoided any postwar interruptions in its growth by quickly converting to meet consumer demand. The U.S. auto industry's return to peacetime production kept the demand for tires high, and BFGOODRICH® met this demand by introducing the first 100 percent synthetic rubber tire in 1945. Two years later it developed the tubeless puncture-sealing tire that increased motorists' protection from blow-outs. The company's LifeSaver and Safetyliner tubeless tires gained wide popularity in the early 1950s, and by 1955 tubeless tires became standard equipment on new cars. Ten years later BFGOODRICH® brought another innovation to the U.S. drivers, the first radial tires for passenger cars. The radial dramatically changed the U.S. tire industry by increasing tire life by up to 50 percent, and like its tubeless predecessor, it ultimately became standard equipment on U.S. cars.

BFGOODRICH® further diversified its production in the postwar era. Continuing a long tradition of research and development, it opened a new research center in Brecksville, Ohio, in 1948. BFGOODRICH® Chemical the company, a subsidiary founded in 1943, took over the company's wartime plants and built new ones in Marietta and Avon Lake, Ohio, and in Calvert City, Kentucky. Production of BFGOODRICH®'s Geon and Koroseal plastic products expanded into overseas markets with joint ventures in Britain and Japan. By 1955 BFGOODRICH® was manufacturing goods in five different areas, including tires, chemicals and plastics, footwear and flooring, industrial products, and sponge rubber goods. It had operations in 21 nations on six continents, and in 1966 its sales reached a record $1 billion.

Strategic Moves in the 1990s

With the full divestiture of its tire business, BFGOODRICH® became a company devoted solely to the production of chemicals, plastics, and aerospace goods. The recovery of its PVC business and the wise investment of capital gained from its tire division sale had in the early 1990s stabilized the company. But in 1993 chief executive John D. Ong sold off the PVC business, to the concern of investors, in favor of emphasizing the company's other chemical businesses.

Some analysts were skeptical of these strategic turns. Writer Zachary Schiller of Business Week, for example, noted that "The company has produced an average annual return on equity of just 1.4 percent since Ong became CEO in 1979, compared with an average of 14.4 percent for the companies in the Standard & Poors Industrials index." Moreover, the companies in the S&P index posted a 5.4 percent annual gain, but BFGOODRICH® sales fell an average of 3.5 percent per year, writing Schiller. The stock lagged at 44, not even close to its 1989 height of 69.

Ong, however, noted for his willingness to change course, pushed into aerospace, although the industry had been sluggish for more than a decade. He built on BFGOODRICH®'s aircraft parts and servicing business. Using proceeds from the sale of PVC, BFGOODRICH® acquired in 1993 Cleveland Pneumatic Co., a landing gear maker that complemented BFGOODRICH®'s wheel-and-brake business, and Rosemount Aerospace, which made sensors that measure flight and data (speed and temperature, for example). That same year also marked the additions of the Landing Gear Division and Landing Gear Services Division and Sanncor Industries.

Ong persisted with his current business mix, pointing out that the company was now positioned for growth opportunities. By 1994 the specialty chemical business started to show improvement, and the aerospace business held promise. The air-craft wheel-and-brake business gradually grew into aircraft parts and services. The following year BFGOODRICH® acquired QSI, Inc. in Greenville, South Carolina. In 1995 purchases included Hoskins Aviation and de-icing product lines and associated technology from Lucas Aerospace.

By 1996 BFGOODRICH® reported that earnings in 1996 were significantly higher than in the past three years. For the second year in a row, BFGOODRICH® Aerospace and BFGOODRICH® Specialty Chemical set records for sales and operating income. The growing demand for replacement products and services proved advantageous to the aerospace division, which also benefited from the upturn in new commercial aircraft production. BFGOODRICH® Specialty Chemicals acquired five businesses and increased manufacturing capacity at existing facilities. Moreover, three new plants were seen as the base for further expansion in Europe and Asia.

In the mid-1990s, Ong reflected on the last decade that took BFGOODRICH® from a struggling company that manufactured commodity products and sold them in highly cyclical markets to a streamlined organization focused on specialty businesses. He noted that the company's inclination for risk-taking lay within the BFGOODRICH® structure rather than outside. By late 1996 BFGOODRICH® shares reached "historic, 126-year highs" and trade at levels once thought unlikely, Ong said. He added that after challenges rocked corporate America in the 1980s and 1990s, BFGOODRICH® started reaching goals. Ong noted that market capitalization at the end of 1996 had increased by about 100 percent from the time the new BFGOODRICH® came into being at the end of 1993.

MICHELIN® IN THE UNITED STATES

MICHELIN® North America is a $10.76 billion dollar a year company operating 19 plants in 16 locations and employs 22,000 people. It manufactures and sells tires for airplanes, automobiles, farm equipment, heavy-duty trucks, motorcycles, and bicycles. MICHELIN® manufactures tires in six states: Alabama, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and South Carolina. In addition, there are three plants in Nova Scotia, Canada, and one plant in Queretaro, Mexico. Two plants specialize in the manufacturing of semi-finished goods taking raw materials and turning them into components for the plants that produce tires and one plant strictly produces synthetic rubber. Finished goods are produced in sixteen plants, two sites produce retreads for the trucking and one site produces retreads for the aircraft industry. MICHELIN® Maps and Guides also produce road atlases, road maps, and travel guides for all the major cities in North America.

MICHELIN® has been a part of the tire industry in the United States since 1907 when it purchased the International Rubber Company in Milltown, New Jersey. Tires and tubes were manufactured there up until 1930 when the Great Depression took its toll on what had become the fourth largest tire manufacturer in the country with 2,000 employees. The MICHELIN® North America as we know it today took form In March of 1950. With three sizes and two different tread designs of truck tires made with metallic plies, five people started MICHELIN® Tire Corporation in New York City. There was an executive vice president, a vice president of sales, a secretary, a warehouse supervisor, and one newly hired sales representative. The tires cost anywhere from 40-50% more than the competition but their construction with metal plies bonded to rubber allowed MICHELIN® salesmen to offer a tire solution to fleets operating under the most severe conditions. This included fleets dealing with extremely heavy loads and in the sanitation business. This strategy established a reputation for durability and quality still prevalent today in the modern trucking industry.

Growth in sales led to the need for a larger facility in 1954. Developed in 1953, MICHELIN® began to import the all-steel one-ply radial truck tire in 1956. This is the tire that revolutionized the world tire market. There was interest in the radial truck, but the bulk of MICHELIN®'s sales were the older, metallic bias-ply tires. Even with steady annual growth, the annual sales volume in 1959 was less than a week's production in a modern truck tire plant.

While the radial passenger tire had been gaining acceptance in Europe with car manufacturers in the late 1950s, it would be the mid1960's before it was a factor in the United States. MICHELIN®'s worldwide growth in the 1960s was phenomenal with the opening of twelve new plants and the announcement that a plant would be built in Nova Scotia, Canada by 1971.

Two major events happened in 1966 that drew MICHELIN® into the largest passenger tire market in the world. Up until 1966, MICHELIN® had only been importing small quantities of radial passenger tires to service consumers with European cars originally fitted with MICHELIN® radial tires. That year Ford decided the 1968 Lincoln Continental Mark III would have radial tires as original equipment. Although domestic tire manufacturers had purchased the license to develop radial tires, none were successful in developing a satisfactory radial tire. Ford then selected MICHELIN® to be the supplier. This was a major boost for both the acceptance of the radial tire and establishing MICHELIN® in North America. The second major event that made MICHELIN® a part of the U.S. tire market happened when SEARS went shopping for a radial tire. In an effort to get ahead of its competition and realizing the impending radicalization of the tire industry, SEARS sought out a supplier and ultimately selected MICHELIN® for its reputation of high quality and technical expertise in building radial tires. By the end of 1969 expansion necessitated another move to a larger headquarters and the workforce had expanded to 250 people. The salesforce was now up to 103 people in the field.

MICHELIN® had led a revolution in the transportation industry with the introduction of the radial tire. As the global demand for radial tires accelerated, MICHELIN® responded with an expansion plan that opened twenty-three new plants, all producing radial tires. MICHELIN® made the decision in the early '70s to produce only radial tires and eliminate the production of the old-style bias-ply tires. Two plants had been opened in Nova Scotia in 1971 and it was announced that construction would soon begin for two plants in the western part of South Carolina. One plant, US2 in Anderson, SC, would build semi-finished products to supply the other plant that would produce tires. The plants were scheduled to open in 1975 and the very first radial passenger tire came off the line at US1, Greenville, South Carolina on March 10, 1975. A third plant, US3, in Spartanburg, SC came online in 1978, producing radial truck tires for the rapidly growing radial market in the trucking industry. Expansion in the 1970s in the U.S. was completed with the opening of US4 in Dothan, Alabama. Along with the plants, a research and development were opened the center in South Carolina because the corporation has always believed in developing products exclusively for a North American market where huge geographical distances demanded different tires than established European markets. In 1979, MICHELIN® opened a new headquarters building in Lake Success, New York to accommodate a continuously growing workforce. MICHELIN® opened the decade with 250 employees and by 1979 the number was 7,000. MICHELIN® had also expanded its tire lines dramatically from two types of tires that still required tubes to a full line of tubeless radial passenger tires to serve the growing demand for tires with greater fuel efficiency, longer life, and better handling. In 1970 there were three types of truck tires offered and the 1970s ended with an expanded line of tires to meet multiple and various needs of fleet owners, from long haul operations to fleets hauling rocks or coal. There were now radial tires for bread fleets and small package delivery fleets.

The 1980s brought the challenges of consolidation and recession to the tire industry. Fully recovered from the effects of World War II, Japanese and European countries were competing for the toe to toe with American companies in a global economy. Many smaller tire companies were absorbed by larger ones because it was obvious that you had to get bigger in order to survive. MICHELIN® had to invest heavily in the expansion of North America and it was not immune to the effects of the recession that hit the tire industry in 1980 and 1981. Serious losses were off-set by becoming more cost-conscious and better planning. There was a major competition to deal with now who were successfully manufacturing radial tires. MICHELIN® has always been a resilient company and it came out of that period stronger and smarter. Two more plants, one in Lexington, SC, and one in Nova Scotia, were opened in the early '80s. To consolidate headquarters operations and manufacturing, MICHELIN® made the decision to relocate its North American headquarters from New York where it had been since 1950 to Greenville, South Carolina. The doors opened at its present location in September of 1988.

After a careful study of market trends and monitoring the actions of its two major global competitors, MICHELIN® made the decision in 1989 to purchase the UNIROYAL® -BFGOODRICH® Tire Company. This acquisition would not only make MICHELIN® the largest tire company in the world but would provide the corporation with a portfolio of strong brands with a rich heritage in the American tire market. UNIROYAL® and BFGOODRICH® Tire formed a joint venture in 1986 to leverage each others' strengths in the original equipment and replacement market. MICHELIN® went into the '90s in a position to offer the best products at the best price point in virtually every consumer category.

More science inside. More performance on the road.  More value per mile. That is WHY we choose MICHELIN® tires here at The Wrench Automotive  for our drivers in Greeley, CO and the surrounding areas.

FORD DIESEL TRUCK HISTORY & INFORMATION

The 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engine.  Here at The Wrench Automotive in Greeley, we have the diesel technicians, the training, the Ford OEM parts, and our team is cross-trained on many different kinds of diesel trucks so you get the advantage of experience.  Trust our team to get to the heart of any problem you have with your Power Stroke diesel quickly and get you fixed up and back on the road working or playing.  Our experience will make the difference and ensure you pay for only what you need to be done.

Power Stroke History

The Power Stroke® Diesel story began in 1982 when the Ford Motor Company made a decision that would transform their Super Duty® pickups into the most highly regarded and hottest-selling trucks in America. In pursuit of a whole new level of durability, power, torque, and capabilities, Ford partnered with International Truck and Engine Corporation or ITEC (later re-named Navistar, Incorporated) to create a new standard in diesel engine technology that would help redefine the industry.

That first power plant, the 6.9L Indirect Injection (IDI) engine, featured a modest 170 HP and 315 lb-ft of torque. The truck world eagerly greeted that very first Power Stroke® diesel.  Not long after, came the next generation Ford Super Duty truck with the amazing 7.3L IDI diesel engine, produced from 1988-1993.

1994 - 2003  The First Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel —The Legendary 7.3L.

In 1994, the 7.3L diesel engine was reborn. This groundbreaking new power plant revolutionized the diesel truck industry, with not just the addition of an all-new turbocharged, Direct Injection (DI), an incredible new power, but the birth of the Power Stroke® name.  Talk to our diesel technicians about service for your 7.3L Power Stroke!

7.3L features included a wastegate turbocharger, HUEI fuel injectors, and an air-to-air intercooler. The 7.3L engines were an instant hit in the trucking world. Production ran non-stop through early 2003. By that time, this engine's performance and durability had made the Power Stroke® name a legend among truckers.

Diesel Power Magazine ranked the 7.3L one of the top ten diesel engines ever produced. Today, over two million 7.3L engine-equipped Ford Trucks are still in operation – more than Chevrolet, GMC, and Dodge diesel, combined. During its 9-year production run, the 7.3L was widely acknowledged as a leader in diesel engine technology.

2003 - 2007 A New 6.0L Power Stroke® Clears The Air

In 2003, the next-generation 6.0L Power Stroke® introduced Ford Truck customers to a new engine with more power and lower emissions than the 7.3L. With its variable geometry turbocharger technology, exhaust gas recirculation system, and advanced, second-generation fuel injection system, the new 6.0L was a groundbreaking engineering breakthrough.  Talk to our diesel technicians about service for your 6.0L Power Stroke!

The result was a major increase in engine horsepower and torque (325 HP and 570 lb-ft), even with a drastic reduction in engine displacement.  This was the first engine design driven by emissions requirements.

2007 - 2010 Clean, Quiet And In Command — The 6.4L Arrives.

The Power Stroke® diesel truck engine legend reached new heights in 2007, with the launch of a new 6.4L diesel.  This engine's cutting-edge technology and reduced emissions pumped out an amazing 350 HP @ 3000 RPM with a peak torque output of 650 lb-ft at just 2000 RPM.  Talk to our diesel technicians about service for your 6.4L Power Stroke!

Developed through more than 10 million miles of torturous durability testing, the 6.4L proved to be the quietest and cleanest Power Stroke® engine to date.  Its twin turbochargers and high-pressure, common-rail fuel injection with piezoelectric fuel injectors also helped Ford Super Duty trucks meet the stringent 2007 diesel emissions requirements.

2011 The New, 2011 6.7L Power Stroke® Engine Arrives.

Ford Power Stroke® diesel truck engine technology has come a long way over the last three decades, but the party is far from over.  For the 2011 model year, Ford is introducing an all-new, built-from-scratch, state-of-the-art 6.7L Power Stroke® diesel – and it's the most advanced diesel Ford has ever built.  Talk to our diesel technicians about service for your 6.7L Power Stroke!

2019 6.7L Turbo-Diesel Power Stroke® Engine Arrives

The all-new 6.7L Power Stroke® V-8 turbocharged diesel engine will deliver significantly improved torque and horsepower as well as class-leading fuel economy, enhancing productivity and further strengthening the Super Duty's position as the class leader in towing and payload.  B20-capable 6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel delivers 935 lb. ft. of torque plus best-in-class* 450 horsepower.  The Power Stroke features a unique inverse-flow configuration: the exhaust manifolds and turbocharger are mounted between the cylinder heads above the engine block.  This inboard configuration allows a large single turbocharger to be mounted closer to the exhaust manifolds for faster air displacement and more power.  Another notable feature is the compacted graphite iron engine block that is stronger yet lighter than cast iron!  Talk to our diesel technicians about service for your 6.L Turbo-Diesel Power Stroke, we are up-to-date on the diagnostics and service for these engines already and can provide warranty work for your truck without the dealer price tags!

Lighter, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient (as well as B20 fuel compatible), this engine, built-in Ford's Chihuahua, Mexico engine plant, takes diesel engineering to an entirely new level.  New features include "Instant Start" glow plugs for quicker starts in even the coldest weather; a new, lightweight compacted graphite iron engine block (160 lbs lighter than the current 6.4L); aluminum cylinder heads (a Power Stroke® first); and piston-cooling jets for longer engine life.

We service and replace Duramax Diesel Engines.

DURAMAX DIESEL ENGINE TRUCK SERVICE

Our Greeley drivers depend on their diesel trucks and the Duramax diesel in their Chevy or GMC pickup and our diesel technicians keep them running at peak performance by making sure we have their maintenance done on time.  The Duramax diesel engine has been consistently improved by Chevrolet / GMC over the last couple of decades and is fairly bulletproof.  This diesel engine by GM is nothing short of a spectacularly powerful, reliable power plant for its line of pickup trucks.  Since its conception, Duramax has been an innovative and respected brand, with over 1.5 million engines produced in the United States and some of the toughest engines on the market today.

complete duramax engine image The 6.6-liter Duramax Engines is produced by DMAX, a joint venture between GM and Isuzu in Moraine, Ohio first released in late 2001 replacing the old 6.5-L Detroit built engine. GM was the first to make this jump and it gave GM an added advantage in the diesel truck market.  The Duramax Engine utilized the new Bosch Common Rail Fuel system.  The early fuel systems included an ECM (Engine Control Module), CP3 Injection pump, FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module), and injectors all of which we are familiar with and work on here at The Wrench Automotive .

The later version fuel system did away with the FICM and utilize a CP4 injection pump.  The Duramax Engine had some issues but they extended the warranty on the injectors to 200,000 miles due to failures that were widespread and there were a lot of diesel trucks in the shop to fix the issue.  Changing the injectors on the LB7 Duramax Engines was time-consuming since they were located under the valve cover.  The premature injector failure was actually a result of air bubbles in the fuel line.  They accumulated in the CP3 pump so when the injector went to fire, the bubble would get between the injector plunger and the injector tip.   With the bubble there, the injector plunger had no fluid damping when it comes into contact with the injector tip causing a small gap to form over time. Once that gap grows large enough fuel is allowed to flow through continuously since the rail is pressurized so high.  The computer system was unable to determine if this is happening so the check engine light would not notify the driver.  The only way to determine if this was happening was to measure the return fuel flow rate.

Here at The Wrench Automotive , we keep up with issues like fuel flow rates and updates in the Duramax diesel engine so that we can provide quick diagnostics for you and answers quickly which equals more efficient and cost-effective repairs and our Duramax diesel truck drivers don't spend as much time in the shop as a result.  It is one way we are able to help our Greeley GMC and Chevy drivers trust their diesel truck to the experts, one big issue fixed at a time!

The true secret to keeping your diesel truck driving like new longer and avoiding repair costs is proper maintenance and repairs done on time vs waiting for them.  Our team of certified diesel technicians is well qualified to fix or maintain anything, including your Duramax diesel warranty issues.  We actually have diagnostic equipment as good as or better than the dealerships and our team is cross-trained on many different kinds of diesel trucks so you get the advantage of experience.  Skip the dealer prices and enjoy the peace of mind you get from quality service, by contacting The Wrench Automotive today for all your diesel repair and maintenance needs.  **Below you will see some of our services | Maintenance Schedule for Duramax Diesel Engines | Specs on the 6.6L V-8 L5P Turbo-Diesel
